Letter from Sylvia: 2020 Accomplishments

KI Photography Club’s Accomplishments in 2020

Since 2020 is thankfully behind us, now is a good time to recap some of the Photography Club accomplishments over the past year.  Actually, 2020 was another very good year for the Photography Club, in spite of everything else happening in the world.  For one, virtual programs and workshops featuring top professionals were offered throughout the summer months into the fall.  The virtual sessions are very popular since members can participate in meetings and virtual photo shoots via the internet.  (www.Zoom.com )  Thank you Jack for being our zoom master each Monday!

Another important milestone occurred this past March when the Club announced an affiliation with Charleston’s Trident Technical College.  A student scholarship program was established in honor of Club founder, John Sanders, titled The Kiawah Island Photography Club/John Sanders Scholarship Fund.  Its purpose is to financially assist those demonstrating need and who are also enrolled in the Photography program with preference given to a Johns Island resident.  A five-hundred-dollar scholarship is awarded to an individual(s) which covers the cost of tuition, books, supplies, and fees for a semester.

The exciting news is that the Club has had two recipients so far!  The first student is from Johns Island and a second student, recently selected by Trident Tech, who is an aspiring photographer and currently works part-time with a professional photographer in Charleston.   Read more about these two students and the scholarship fund here.

More good scholarship news occurred in December when the Club Board elected to fulfill the remaining four years of the five-year monitory obligation to the Scholarship Fund.  By satisfying this obligation now, additional money is available to help deserving students as Covid-19 has caused economic challenges for students.  They need our help now more than ever. Several members have already made donations and others are encouraged to contribute scholarship money directly to the Kiawah Island Photography Club/John Sanders Scholarship Fund.  This tax-deductible gift can be made directly to the College.   A special thank you goes to Kimberly for all that she has done to make this Scholarship Fund a reality!

The Photography Club website was updated in 2020 and has a new look!  For example, now a recording of programs and workshops is available for those who missed a session or just want a review, plus links to member’s websites and visiting professional photographers are available.  The calendar shows upcoming events plus a membership form is available for Kiawah residents who are interested in joining.  Jeri Means and Jack Kotz did a wonderful job organizing the website!

These accomplishments and more were possible through the dedication and work of many members.  A thank you goes to the Board and all the members for their support.  It is your enthusiasm and encouragement which continues to make the Kiawah Island Photography Club so successful!!

Best regards,

Sylvia Bacon
