The 2023 Firehouse Project

April 28, 2023

Hi, All,

This Friday, April 28th, at 9:00 am, our Kiawah firefighters and the Kiawah Island Photography Club are co-hosting a very special event, and you are all invited!

After learning that our two firehouses had no art on their walls, the Photo Club embarked on a community service project to enhance the living space for our firefighters. Photo club members were given the opportunity to submit three Kiawah landscape or wildlife photos. These photos were then presented to the firefighters in a slideshow (with every submission being anonymous) so the firefighters from each firehouse could vote on, and ultimately choose, 22 photos, to be permanently displayed in our two island firehouses.

Then, within the Photo Club membership, we raised over $10,000 to have these photos professionally printed and framed on large canvases by an outstanding printing company called APC/Luxe Prints. The smallest prints are 20 x 30, and the largest are 30 x 40!

All of these beautiful, framed photographs (including the 22 that will be going into our island’s other station house) will be on display next Friday at the Open House at Station House 4, off of Kiawah Island Parkway. This is a unique opportunity to see the interior space of one of our firehouses AND to see the work of many talented photographers on Kiawah!

As a bonus, the firefighters will be “blessing” a new fire truck, to be placed in service on Kiawah Island. It is a tradition in the fire service to wash the truck and give it a blessing before it is placed into service. Our district Fire Chief, Ryan Kunitzer, will be in attendance and the blessing ceremony will begin at 9:00 am. The station house will then be open until 11:00 am for viewing of the photos.

Please join us for this very special event!

Best, Kimball Kraus
