Bob Krist: Photographing People

May 10, 2021
Zoom

We were privileged to have Bob Krist join us for our final meeting, and talk to us about his long history shooting portraits.

People photography is often the last frontier for many photo enthusiasts…landscapes, wildlife, macros, are never a problem but the prospect of approaching a stranger for a portrait will make most shooters weak in the knees.

In his 40+ year career, shooting extended stories for National Geographic and other magazines in over 150 countries, Bob has extensive experience photographing people and he’ll share some of his techniques in this presentation.

He talks about:

  • 1.  How to break the ice with strangers
  • 2.  Different ways of approaching composition and style
  • 3.  The best light for different portrait situations
  • 4.  How to “work” a portrait session
  • 5.  How to break the hold of the Instagram ‘selfie’ culture
  • 6.  Why photographing people is so important

Bob also shared his latest book, Old Souls & Timeless Places, a book he created as the “anti-Instagram” approach to travel and photography. It won the first prize Gold Award as “Best Travel Book” in the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism awards.
