First Monthly Meeting of our new year – All Monthly Meetings this year will be ZOOM
Photographing People – a Presentation by National Geographic Photographer Catherine Karnow
The secret to creating great photographs of people is getting to know your subjects and making a connection with them even before you pick up your camera.
National Geographic photographer Catherine Karnow will show you how it’s done, whether you are shooting candid images and street scenes, environmental portraits, or photographing family and friends. Catherine will share her tips on how photography can help us connect with people around the world, and create long-lasting relationships. Learn important and surprising techniques – that may have nothing to do with the camera at all – to create powerful, emotional portraits.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, she is now San Francisco and Provence based. Catherine has covered topics and cultures around the world, specializing in Asia and Europe. Her work has appeared in National Geographic, National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, French & German GEO, and other
international publications.
A notable life project has been her 30 years of photography of Vietnam, the years of the most marked changes in Vietnam’s modern history.
Catherine’s passion for photography carries into her love for teaching. She gives curated boutique Photo Workshops and teaching seminars all over the world for private, corporate, and editorial clients. Her signature workshops in Italy, Provence, Transylvania, and Vietnam-Cambodia are unique in the roster of workshops.
Catherine says, “in my workshops, I guide my guests to express the beauty they see and feel, and experience the wondrous affirmation we can share with people across borders of language, culture and class. I believe that the joyous act of photography is a beautiful way to connect with people. Through photography, we can practice people-to-people diplomacy all over the world.”
Students say:
“(Her) ability to teach in a way that is as creative as (her) photography make (her) one of the best teachers I’ve ever had….”
“She’s a wonderful teacher…helping you hone your skills no matter what level photographer you are.”
