Michael Melford has traveled the world as a professional photographer for 40 years. 

His work has been featured on the cover of an impressive array of big-name magazines. National Geographic, Nat Geo Traveler, LIFE, Newsweek, Fortune, Discover, Travel and Leisure, Coastal Living, and Natural History, to name just a few. 

But he defines himself through his work with National Geographic. He has produced 18 stories including two cover stories for National Geographic Magazine and over 30 stories for National Geographic Traveler magazine, including nine covers. His photography appears in eight National Geographic books.  His favorite: Treasures of Alaska, is the result of 3 intense months exploring that wonderland. 

Michael’s work has been driven by the beauty of natural landscapes and the importance of preserving them. A major part of his work for National Geographic magazine has celebrated the marvels of our National Parks. Over the years he covered 14 of them, drawing attention to the challenges they face. 

Michael has a long history of teaching photographic workshops. He enjoys teaching every level of photographer especially those who know little about their cameras, but are curious and have their eyes wide open to the world. 

He has led one-day seminars through National Geographic Traveler’s photo seminar series and most recently travels with National Geographic Expeditions aboard their small ship fleet and on their around-the-world trips.

In 2019 Michael was honored by the US Postal Service when they selected 5 of his images to be part of a 12-stamp collection celebrating Our Wild and Scenic Rivers.
