SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Ralph Lee Hopkins: Pandemic Inspired Adventures
DESCRIPTION:Pandemic Inspired Adventures \n\n\n\nPhotographer Ralph Lee Hopkins travels to the world’s wild places with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. An inspiring teacher\, Ralph leads workshops for National Geographic Expeditions\, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops\, and Arizona Highways Photo Workshops.  \n\n\n\nNot this past year. Plan to be entertained as Ralph recounts his adventures as he attempted to stay (presumably) safe and sane. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRalph Lee Hopkins is returning to tell us about how he continued his photographic endeavors when the pandemic disrupted his primary work with Linblad Expeditions.  As Ralph describes it: \n\n\n\n“The stars aligned this summer with the arrival of comet NEOWISE.  \n\n\n\nSafe escape from my bubble in Charlotte\, North Carolina\, was already planned when I heard astronomers had discovered a new comet in our night sky. I paid no attention until I read that comet NEOWISE was going to be visible in mid-to-late July\, and that it wouldn’t be back in the view from Earth for another 6800 years. I can’t wait that long. The chase was on! \n\n\n\nComet NEOWISE presented the perfect opportunity to explore the dark skies of Utah. The comet also presented the perfect opportunity to test the Starry Sky Autofocus feature on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III\, my newest camera and one of the hottest mirrorless digital cameras on the market today for astro photographers. \n\n\n\nBut wait\, there’s more…  \n\n\n\n In October\, I left the bubble again and headed back out west. This time to chase fall color in Colorado\, look for wolves in Yellowstone\, and be with the grizzly bears in the Grand Tetons.  \n\n\n\n The highlight of that trip was seeing the famous bear 399\, who this year had 4\, count them\, four cubs. I spent hours watching 399 teaching her young to hunt and dig for ground squirrels and other burrowing rodents. \n\n\n\n And then there’s the story about meeting the Desert Doctor. But for that\, you’ll have to wait for my presentation. \n\n\n\n It’s been a strange year with my regular travel schedule on the National Geographic ships cancelled. Luckily for me\, I was able to escape to the wilds of the American West to feed my soul.” \n\n\n\nCheck out Ralph’s website:  https://ralphleehopkins.zenfolio.com \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRalphLeeHopkins.com

SUMMARY:Pam Cohen critique & Topaz
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary walk through Magnolia Gardens! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPam even painted backdrops for us to use with the flowers which were great fun. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHere are her thoughts about Monday\,  “I like to get into the “nuts and bolts” of photography and really teach what it takes to improve images. I will critique the workshop photographers’ images\, use them as a learning source\, and offer my opinion with an objective eye. Good feedback utilized in a constructive manner can enhance photographic skills as well as improve confidence in a photographer. Much can be learned by all whether you were a participant in the workshops or not.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSee her outstanding images below! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAlso\, please join in for Pam’s group show at the Wells Gallery starting today titled Looking Up. http://wellsgallery.com/searchresults.php?artistId=10110&artistname=Looking Up: A Group Show

SUMMARY:Small Group Session: Water Drops & Nik
DESCRIPTION:A pot-pourri of topics \n\n\n\nKimberly suggested that others might like to know how I did the water drop photos for a recent workshop. I will show everyone a very simple setup and how to get fun photos even with a phone and iPad. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDxO has been aggressively advertising the NIK software package\, and they have had many online workshops. Our friend Kate Silvia has been doing them recently. In the workshop\, on Monday morning we will revisit 5 or 6 favorite filters in NIK Color Efex Pro and discuss some of the finer details of using this powerful software. It is just in time to use it with your terrific photos from Pam Cohen’s Magnolia Workshop! (The photo below is from a Pam Magnolia workshop a few years ago. A NIK filer was used.)

SUMMARY:Small Group Session w/Jack Kotz
DESCRIPTION:MANAGING YOUR PHOTO FILES AND EDITING TIPS AND TRICKS \n\n\n\nThis small group session will cover several topics\, but the emphasis is on managing your photo files\, particularly in Lightroom. Plus other topics!By now many of us have accumulated hundreds of photos in files spread over hard drives. The main problem is that the hard drives will FAIL. It is not a question of “if” but a question of “when.” Or\, although the drive may not fail\, it could be lost in a house fire or other accident. You won’t want to lose the files! This seminar will first focus on the way that Lightroom files\, in particular\, are structured and how to know where they are located on your hard drive. Next\, we will look at one way to make backup copies of the files on other hard drives. One way to store and have copies of files is on a collection of small hard drives. We will look at a process that is suitable for most of us\, but Pam Cohen will describe an even more powerful method. In the next part of the session\, we will review the Lightroom techniques that Les Saucier described this week. As many know\, there are numerous approaches to editing files. We will compare his very effective approach to others. Finally\, Tina Schell had some very nice photo collages in her blog this week\, and she will demonstrate how to build these.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Les Saucier - Increasing Your Creative Vision
DESCRIPTION:Increasing Your Creative Vision\n\n\n\nLes Saucier\, a KIPC favorite\, returns\, via Zoom! For nearly forty years\, Les has been teaching photography workshops in the Adirondack Mountains\, the Oregon Coast\, Zion National Park\, and the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains. Currently\, Les\, and his wife\, Janet\, specialize in photography workshops (and one-on-one Zoom sessions) that help clients grow as visual artists\, and gain skills that can “translate their unique way of seeing the world into images that have heart\, express heart\, and connect with a viewer’s heart.”In this presentation\, Les will discuss and demonstrate three ways to improve photographic creativity: using your creative vision to select the subject\, capturing the subject utilizing your camera skills\, and emphasizing your vision with your post-processing skills.Virtual Photo Shoot:  Les will give an assignment that will result in two photos: one image that “celebrates the beauty” you are seeing\, and one that you like\, but that you feel is “missing something”.  As Les notes: “It feels great to show your friends your “hero” shots\, but you will learn more from a critique of your lesser images.”On March 1st\, Les will review and critique the images of those who have chosen to participate in this assignment.  Details on signing up for this virtual photoshoot to follow soon!Check out Les and Janet’s work at www.saucierphoto.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAfter Les’s presentation\, Tina or Jack will show this month’s Monthly Challenge Video: From BAD to BEST!

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Laurie Tennent: Botanicals - Intimate Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Botanicals: Intimate Portraits \n\n\n\nAn introduction to her distinctive\, dramatic botanical images \n\n\n\nLaurie Tennent’s photographs capture precise\, exquisite detail and expose what is often missed or dismissed. Her striking botanicals are represented in an impressive array of museums\, galleries\, exhibitions\, public gardens\, and private collections. Audiences are surprised by the power and form of her large-scale photographs\, some of which are nearly eight feet in length\, and some are displayed outdoors exposed to the elements. \n\n\n\nBrilliant colors against the dark surface create a dramatic multi-dimensional image. An unorthodox approach to lighting and capture creates a dramatic effect. Although the compositions are bold\, the work quietly reveals a delicate sensuality allowing the spectator to be submerged in the massive blooms and inner architecture of plant life. Her Botanicals portfolio is shown in gallery settings and is also planted outside in gardens providing a new dimension for exploring the botanical garden. The outdoor show participates in and intersects with the ever-changing landscape. Laurie will discuss this new approach to the botanical illustration genre. \n\n\n\nLaurie\, who has been an award-winning international photographer-artist for over 25 years\, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from the College of Creative Studies in Detroit. She is a resident of Bloomfield Hills\, MI with a studio in Birmingham\, Michigan. \n\n\n\nCheck out her work at: www.laurietennentbotanicals.com \n\n\n\nVirtual Photo Shoot:  Laurie will give an assignment to the club that will involve observing closely what you might otherwise miss or dismiss in order to explore the unique patterns\, textures\, and intricacies of nature.  \n\n\n\nOn February 1\, she will review the images of those who have chosen to participate in this assignment.  Details on signing up for this virtual photoshoot to follow! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nlaurietennentbotanicals.com

SUMMARY:Workshop: Nik Software w/ Jack Kotz
DESCRIPTION:The Nik Collection of 8 programs has been around for some years. Although some of their functionality has been incorporated into programs such as Lightroom\, they do have a unique power to enhance color photos and to create stunning back & white photos. The great majority of color or B&W photos I post\, print\, or sell have been edited in Color Efex or Silver Efex.   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis workshop will illustrate the features of four of the components of the Nik collection: \n\n\n\nViveza \n\n\n\nColor Efex \n\n\n\nSilver Efex \n\n\n\nDfine \n\n\n\nThe suite of programs is available at https://nikcollection.dxo.comKate Silvia has some excellent videos on Nik (and other programs): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCyEw4USV4ho16g58jbwQYg/videos \n\n\n\nhttps://www.katesilviaphotography.com/ \n\n\n\nhttps://www.katesilviaphotography.com/video-education \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSee also tutorials by Robin Whalley: \n\n\n\nRobin Whalley – YouTube

SUMMARY:Workshop: Editing the same image\, 6 ways
DESCRIPTION:One Image Edited Different Ways! This workshop will present one image edited in six different ways! We have a panel up for the challenge\, each will use different software. They will all work on a photo straight out of camera (SOOC) that Tina donated for the cause. It is certain that the outcomes will all be different! \n\n\n\n\n\nYou will get a glimpse of how they approach editing with their tact-sharp or artistic flair. Kimberly  Apple Photo and Luminar \n\n\n\nDave Lightroom \n\n\n\nSylvia Photoshop \n\n\n\nJack Nik   \n\n\n\nTina Lightroom\, Nik\, Photoshop \n\n\n\nPam Topaz

SUMMARY:Workshop: Apple Photo & Luminar
DESCRIPTION:Morris and Dick will lead this workshop on Luminar and Apple Photos.  For those of you who have not used either of these editing programs\, the meeting will introduce you to their various capabilities. For current users\, this will be an update and a good opportunity to ask our presenters specific questions about issues you’ve had with the software packages. If you do have a specific question\, please send it to either Morris (Apple)mailto:mvhanan@gmail.comor Dick (Luminar)mailto:rxl24@msn.com\, so they can prepare to address it. \n\n\n\nBoth Morris and Dick have asked that you submit an image or two that you’d like to see edited in these post-processing software packages. From a landscape to a portrait\, anything may be submitted\, and you might consider sending an image that looks “hopeless” to process to see if these software packages could help you in your post-processing efforts. If you use Apple’s Photos for editing\, then you’ll want Luminar! It is fantastic for some basic fixes that Photos does poorly\, such as erasing unwanted objects! The skin enhancer and sky replacement do a great job as well\, see below before and after images. \n\n\n\nDick will also discuss the new Skylum program – Luminar AI – which will be unveiled soon and is a totally new platform (not an upgrade from Luminar 4) heavily based on artificial intelligence. \n\n\n\nIf you don’t already have Luminar 4\, the current version\, don’t buy it now\, just use their free trial. https://skylum.com/luminar-x-membership.  As the new Luminar AI is not an upgrade to Luminar 4 but rather a new product. The pre-order pricing is $59 if you already have Luminar or $69 if buying it for the first time\, this is not a subscription instead you own it outright.  \n\n\n\nKimberly Wissel \n\n\n\nKIPC Workshop Chair Just 1 click adds clouds to an image! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuminar’s skin enhancement.

SUMMARY:Annual KIPC Holiday Gift Ideas
DESCRIPTION:From Jack: Old hands know that for some years we have had a session about this time of year to list all of the photography-related items your best friend can buy you for Christmas that cost under $100. We will generally follow that guide\, but there has been some suggestion that we extend the limit upward (because someone has in mind a somewhat more expensive item). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJust a few of the things you might need are cleaning cloths\, a new camera strap\, a better equipment bag\, a lens wrench\, a mini-tripod\, a bubble level\, a Rocket blower\, a remote trigger\, color checker\, polarizing filter\, new hard drive\, Nik software\, books\, plamp\, . . . \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nI will work through my list of items but I welcome suggestions!
